Naming Bases

Bases are substances which when dissolved in water, produce the hydroxide ion, OH . Bases conduct electricity, tend to be slippery, and taste bitter. Bases consist of a metal and a hydroxide.

Examples:

 Name

 Formula

 Sodium hydroxide

 NaOH

 Barium hydroxide

 Ba(OH)2

 Potassium hydroxide

 KOH

You can try a few but after acids these are a piece of cake!

1. Magnesium hydroxide

2. Calcium hydroxide

3. Lithium hydroxide

4. NH4OH

5. Sr(OH)2

6. Ra(OH)2
